Hayao Miyazaki to Retire - say it ain't so Hayao!

I am sure you have already heard the news, but I wanted to drop my own dialogue here about it.

I am not sure what ripples this caused over at Studio Ghibli, but I am sure it was taken with mixed emotions. Like you, I was taken back by this announcement as I have love his work. He has been dropping some wonderfully visual tales since 1984 with Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind and up to his latest this year called The Wind Rises. He brought books to life for us to enjoy in such a way that you learned something about yourself and the world. His movies bridged the gap of generations as these were movies for any age.

It was a very easy way for any family to be transitioned into anime. His movies have a high place in my home and we always grab one to watch all over again. In fact my son used to always want to rewatch Kiki's Delivery Service when he was younger. What I didn't know was that he also did manga. If it wasn't for Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind manga being turned into an anime, who knows what would have happened.

Here are my Top 5 Favorites:
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Porco Rosso

I want to wish Hayao Miyazaki a wonderful retirement and a well deserved rest. He has given us so much and it is time for him to take time to enjoy the world around him. I hope that he may bring us a couple more tales later, but only time will tell.

Thank you as well for bring Joy and Adventure to all of us around the World!

UPDATE:

He has made his retirement officially today (06SEP13). Here are a couple notable quotes from the announcement:

“My time for long animated films has come to an end,” he said, noting that he was tiring and losing concentration more easily. “I need to step away from the desk half an hour sooner than I would have needed to when I was making ‘Ponyo,’” he added.

“I wanted to tell children that this world is worth living in,” he said.

We all wish you a Happy and Healthy Retirement!

  1. Too bad I haven't got around to watch his latest movies, but his older ones have been a great pleasure to watch, and for most cases they're both children and family friendly.

Big thanks to Miyazaki for his movies for worldwide fans!
